Complementary products
Suggest products that go with the one a shopper is viewing, with the Buy together section or Product recommendations.
Propel gives you two ways to show products that go with the one a shopper is viewing:
- Buy together: a list of items the shopper can add to the cart in one step.
- Product recommendations with Intent set to Complementary: a row of product cards.
Both can use the complementary products you set in Shopify's Search & Discovery app.
Buy together
Add the section
- Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.
- Open a product template.
- Select Add section and choose Buy together.
Buy together is available on product templates.
Settings

Choose the products
Buy together takes its products from one of two places:
- The Products setting. Pick products here to show the same list on every product that uses the template. To give each product its own list, connect Products to a product list metafield (see below).
- Search & Discovery. If Products is empty, Buy together uses the complementary products set for the product in Shopify's Search & Discovery app.
Items limits how many are listed from either source.
Give each product its own list
Propel doesn't add a metafield for this. Create your own:
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Custom data > Products.
- Add a metafield definition with the type Product, set to accept a list of products.
- Open each product and choose the products that go with it.
- In the theme editor, select Buy together and use the connect dynamic source button beside Products to choose your metafield.
What shoppers see
- Each listed item has a checkbox to keep or skip it, and its own option picker when it has variants.
- Sold-out items and variants can't be selected.
- The total updates as items are kept or skipped.
- One button adds every kept item to the cart, for example Add 2 items to bag.
Product recommendations with Complementary intent
- Open a product template and add or select Product recommendations.
- Set Intent to Complementary.
The section then shows the complementary products set in Search & Discovery as product cards. When a product has none, the section is hidden. With Intent set to Related, it shows similar products that Shopify picks automatically.
Set complementary products in Search & Discovery
- Install Shopify's Search & Discovery app, if it isn't already installed.
- In the app, open Product recommendations.
- Choose a product and add its complementary products.
- Save, then check the product page on your storefront.
