Currencies and countries
Let shoppers choose their country and currency with Shopify Markets, and see how the country selector and free shipping message behave.
Propel shows prices in the shopper's local currency through Shopify Markets. There are no theme settings to turn this on: once you sell in more than one country, Propel shows a country selector.
Set up markets
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Markets.
- Open a market or create a new one.
- Add the countries or regions you want to sell to.
- Set the currency for each market.
- Save your changes.
Country selector
When your store sells in more than one country, Propel shows a country selector:
- Header: the country and language selectors share one popover.
- Footer: country and language show as two buttons side by side.
- Mobile menu: country has its own view in the menu drawer.
Each country is listed with its currency, for example United Kingdom (GBP £). When you sell in more than 9 countries, the list adds a search field so shoppers can find their country quickly.
Choosing a country reloads the store in that country's currency.
Where prices change
Prices show in the selected currency across the storefront, including:
- product pages and quick view;
- collection pages and search results;
- the cart drawer and cart page.
Free shipping progress bar
The free shipping message is set in Online Store > Themes > Customize > Theme settings > Cart and checkout:
- Enable free shipping progress bar shows how much more a shopper needs to spend for free shipping, in the cart drawer, cart page and announcement bar.
- Free shipping threshold is the amount, in your store currency. For example, 100 means 100 of your store currency.
The message shows only to shoppers paying in your store currency. Shoppers who choose another currency don't see it.
This setting only displays a message. Set up the actual free shipping rate in Settings > Shipping and delivery.
Recommended setup order
- Set up one extra market first.
- Check its currency and countries.
- Check that the country selector appears in the header and footer.
- Check prices on a product page, a collection page, search and the cart.
- Add the remaining markets.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Country selector doesn't show | Your store sells in only one country | Add another country or region to a market. |
| Prices don't change after choosing a country | The market's currency isn't set up | Set the currency for that market in Settings > Markets. |
| Free shipping message missing for some shoppers | They are paying in a currency other than your store currency | This is expected. The message shows only in your store currency. |
Final check before publishing
- Switch between at least two countries.
- Confirm prices update on product, collection and search pages.
- Confirm the cart shows the selected currency.
- Place a test order and check the currency stays the same through checkout.
