Pre-orders and selling when out of stock
How Propel shows variants that continue selling at zero stock, and how real pre-orders work through a selling plan app.
Propel treats two situations differently:
- Selling when out of stock. A variant keeps selling after its stock reaches zero. Propel tells shoppers it ships when restocked.
- Pre-orders. A pre-order app adds a purchase option with its own terms, such as paying a deposit now and the rest later. Propel shows that option's name and terms.
Propel has no pre-order theme settings. Both behaviors come from how you set up the product in Shopify.
Selling when out of stock
Set it up
- In Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product.
- Open the variant.
- In Inventory, keep Track quantity on and turn on Continue selling when out of stock.
What shoppers see
When the variant's stock is zero or below:
- The product page shows Out of stock – ships when restocked as the stock text. Stock text shows when Show stock is on in the Product context block of Main product.
- Cart lines, in the cart drawer and on the cart page, show the same message.
- The button still reads Add to followed by your cart name, for example Add to bag. A variant that can't be bought shows Sold out.
Propel does not call these orders pre-orders, because selling past zero alone doesn't set any pre-order terms.
Real pre-orders
For true pre-orders, use an app that adds a deferred purchase option to the product: a one-time (not recurring) selling plan, for example a pre-order or try before you buy. The app creates the plan and its terms; Propel displays them.
When a product has a deferred selling plan:
- The plan's name, as the app or you wrote it, shows as the stock text on the product page.
- The plan's terms show beside the button, including what is charged now and what is charged later.
- The cart shows the plan's terms on the line.
- The button still reads Add to followed by your cart name.
Quick add
Products that require a selling plan skip quick add on product cards. Shoppers go to the product page to choose options and see the plan's terms before adding to cart.
Cart name
The word used for the cart in buttons and messages comes from Online Store > Themes > Customize > Theme settings > Cart and checkout > Cart name and Cart name in sentences.
